Feminist Art

Feminist art is a genre of art linked to the feminist movement of the late 1960s and 1970s.

Feminist art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, aiming to challenge male dominance in both the art world and society, advocating for recognition and equality for women artists, and challenging preconceptions about womanhood. Artists within this movement used diverse mediums, including painting, performance art, and crafts traditionally associated with ‘women's work’, to address issues such as sexism, oppression, and the notion that femininity is a constructed facade adopted by women to conform to societal norms.

While the discussions initiated during this period persist, a younger generation of feminist artists now incorporates intersecting concerns related to race, class, various forms of privilege, and gender identity and fluidity. Both feminism and feminist art continue to evolve.
