Ferrari Sheppard marks the Miles Davis Centenary with a new artwork celebrating the legendary jazz musician.

Round Midnight is one of two recent paintings by the Chicago-born artist, exploring the "mythology of cool" that surrounds Davis and the history of jazz. This piece takes its title from 'Round About Midnight, Davis's first album for Columbia Records, released in 1957 and recorded in New York between 1955 and 1956. Sheppard's signature blend of abstraction and figuration effortlessly channels the intimacy and mystique of jazz, and here, a warm burnt orange palette conjures the glow of a late-night club and the hazy hush of the small hours. Painted in 2026, this is the first time the work has been editioned.

Made in close collaboration with the artist at our London print house, Make-Ready, this signed limited edition print of 100 is finished with three silkscreen layers: a matte varnish seal, gold shimmer details and black details. It is designed as a companion to All Blues, and the two works are designed to be collected together.

Ferrari Sheppard2 collaborationsFerrari Sheppard paints scenes from domestic life in acrylic, charcoal and 24-karat gold leaf. Wide, rough-edged brush strokes blur figuration and abstraction, giving each canvas a sense of physical movement. In the works, Sheppard centres Black narratives. The Americana series from 2019 for example depicts 1950s America from the perspective of African-American children. Focusing on their hand-games and cultural traditions of call and response, the artist celebrates the resilience and beauty of humanity, in spite of the violence perpetrated against Black people in America at the time. In his work as a writer, photographer, record producer and activist, Sheppard further explores racial and ethnic identity.
