Chic living meets surrealism in a previously-unseen collage by Mickalene Thomas.

Collage is a foundational element of Thomas’ practice, revealing the conception and intimate stages of her artistic vision. Absent of figures, the surreal yet stylish interior draws us inside with amalgamation of layers. Each nook waits to be explored, adorned with eclectic patterns and injected with glitter. Moving from the nostalgic living space to the verdant garden outside, we are led to imagine what stories could be told from within the artist’s carefully fashioned space.

Reminiscent of glossy vintage magazines, the print edition is finished with a silkscreen layer of metallic shimmer, hand-applied glitter and a matte seal.

“Collage is how I draw and see, create form and composition. It's a defining moment of learning, unlearning and redefining the concepts and images in my work.”

Baldur Helgason in the studio
Baldur Helgason2 collaborationsModern life is comical and unsettling. Just like caricatures by Baldur Helgason. Often, they’re in the style of cartoons from the 1950s – like Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse. The figures are clown-like, grappling with tricky spaces, smoking, or painting. On the surface, the oil paintings are playful. But they deliberately confront the ambient anxiety of society. Helgason starts with a “blank canvas and puts down a layer of Burnt Umber.” Then, he layers pigments of bright vivid colours over it. His artistic inspiration comes from “the Masters style of painting skin tones. Like Rembrandt or Sargent.” Like Helgason, their portraits reflected on society in the 17th-century and Edwardian-era.
